BeatSUD Foundation
Welcome! We are a dedicated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to advancing research on non-traditional and complementary approaches to the treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs) and other brain disorders. At BeatSUD, we believe that innovative, evidence-based adjunctive approaches can enhance recovery options and improve lives.

Our Vision
A world in which substance use disorders—and other brain disorders—are treated as whole‑brain, whole‑person conditions, guided by science and supported by compassion, where innovative approaches calm the brain, restore hope, and help individuals reclaim healthy, meaningful lives.

Our Mission
BeatSUD Foundation advances and accelerates real‑world, rigorous research to transform and expand innovative treatments for substance use disorders and other brain disorders—integrating neuroscience, music, mindfulness, and compassion to support lasting recovery and meaningful patient benefit.

Healing the brain. Restoring hope. Changing lives.

BeatSUD Foundation Core Values
Our core values are fundamentally about:
-
Treating substance use disorder as a chronic brain‑based disease, not a moral failing
-
Addressing the core driver of relapse: cravings and dysregulated brain states
-
Advancing non‑pharmaceutical, evidence‑based and emerging innovations, especially:
-
Music and sound‑based therapies
-
Mindfulness and whole‑person approaches
-
tACS and other neuromodulation approaches
-
-
Bridging rigorous science, human dignity and hope
-
Funding research translation, not just theory—real‑world impact on relapse and long‑term sustainable recovery
What We Do

Fund Research
We support pragmatic real-world randomized clinical trials that evaluate the impact of music, mindfulness, and other neuromodulating approaches on outcomes in substance use disorders and other brain disorders. We are building evidence from an ultimate clinical trial ecosystem using a platform that allows us to rapidly generate clinical trial apps for new trials, so that we can address pressing research questions that are limiting integration of effective neuromodulation approaches into clinical practice.

Raise Awareness
Through dissemination of our research, we work to educate the public, healthcare providers, and policymakers about effective, science-backed alternative therapies that can complement traditional treatment methods.

Support Individuals in Recovery
As we determine effective approaches, we will publicly release an app (no subscription, small fee of $5 to cover maintenance) with the effective neuromodulating approach so that it is accessible to all people with brain disorders, especially the underserved. Once we have the donors needed, we also plan to provide scholarships to help those seeking treatment access the resources they need on their journey to healing.

How to Volunteer
-
Donate a fixed amount, or set up a recurring donation
-
Volunteer your time – we have opportunities for you such as helping us identify outpatient treatment programs that are interested in informing their outpatients about the opportunity to participate in randomized clinical trials, reaching out to faith leaders to help them understand our goals, sharing recruitment materials with those who might benefit, or even helping us monitor progress in our trials. Simply use the Contact Us form to express your interest and provide your contact info.
-
Spread the word. Let others know about what we are doing, especially those needing help or families of those needing help. Look for us on Reddit and Instagram and share our posts. However you can spread the word, we appreciate your help!
Our Initiatives

Our Current Focus
Discover how we are making a difference in the lives of individuals affected by Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Your contribution directly supports the planning, conduct and analysis of our current clinical trial (TONES) that assesses how music can help in healing and recovery, and helps us plan for 30 or more clinical trials over the next five years. Together, we can create a brighter future for those in need.
