Research Studies

BeatSUD is studying whether specially designed music may support people receiving outpatient treatment for opioid use disorder.

Can Music Help Support Recovery?

BeatSUD is conducting a small pilot-test study to make sure our research app works as intended before a larger study begins.

Pilot-Test Trial · 24 participants · About 3–5 hours over two weeks

  • Two 25-minute music-listening sessions

  • A short wearable headband that records brainwave activity during listening; it is not a medical device and does not affect care

  • A follow-up conversation to share feedback that will help shape the larger study

  • A $150 e-gift card for eligible participants who complete the study

Who may be eligible?

Adults ages 18–75 with opioid use disorder who have been in an outpatient treatment program for at least two weeks may be eligible. Download the research app to review study information and find out whether you may qualify.

TONES Trial

TONES is the larger study evaluating whether music designed with specific calming features may help support recovery, compared with another version of music.

Planned enrollment: 180 participants · Study participation: up to 12–24 weeks

  • Short music sessions a few times each week through the research app

  • Participants and the study team will not know which music version a participant receives during the trial

  • Up to $360 in e-gift cards over the full study

Questions about participating

Will this replace my treatment?

No. The research app and study activities are intended to be used alongside—not instead of—participants’ current treatment and recovery supports.

What happens after I download the app?

You can review study information and determine whether you may be eligible. Downloading the app alone does not enroll you in a study.

Can I stop participating?

Yes. Participation is voluntary. Study-specific information in the app explains how to withdraw from the study.
